EasyJet Completes Navigation Software Rollout on 54 Aircraft

News summary

EasyJet has completed the installation of advanced Future Air Navigation System-C (Fans-C) software across its entire fleet of 54 A320 and A321 neo aircraft, including new planes from Airbus which come pre-equipped with the technology. This system enhances communication with air traffic control (ATC) by sharing real-time aircraft positioning data and enabling ATC instructions, such as altitude changes, to be sent via text messages instead of radio, which reduces the risk of miscommunication and delays. Since its initial implementation in 2019, EasyJet estimates the software has saved 334 tonnes of fuel, contributing to reductions in carbon emissions and noise pollution. The airline has highlighted that French ATC disruptions were responsible for the majority of its summer delays, underscoring the importance of modernized airspace management. David Morgan, EasyJet’s COO, emphasized the critical role of technologies like Fans-C in airspace modernization and called for swift delivery of UK and European airspace reforms to maximize these benefits. Meanwhile, the UK Department for Transport and Civil Aviation Authority are forming a team of aviation experts to collaborate with airports on airspace modernization, with a UK Airspace Design Service expected to launch by the end of the year.
