Toto Wolff Clarifies Comments on Hamilton

Toto Wolff, the principal of Mercedes F1, clarified his comments regarding Lewis Hamilton's 'shelf life' in a new book, stating that they were taken out of context. While discussing the transition of Hamilton to Ferrari in 2025, Wolff emphasized that he did not imply Hamilton is past his prime, asserting that the seven-time champion remains 'very sharp'. He explained that his remarks were intended to reflect on aging in sports and the need to evaluate one's performance, not to diminish Hamilton's capabilities. Wolff acknowledged Hamilton's mixed results this season, including two wins, but noted that his experience and racecraft continue to be significant assets. As Hamilton prepares to leave Mercedes, Wolff expressed appreciation for the notice given by Hamilton, which helps the team manage the transition. Mercedes has decided to replace Hamilton with 18-year-old Andrea Kimi Antonelli for the 2025 season.
