Australia has launched a groundbreaking oral immunotherapy (OIT) program for infants with peanut allergies, making it the first nationwide initiative of its kind globally. The program, dubbed ADAPT, will provide eligible babies under 12 months with daily doses of peanut powder to gradually build their tolerance over a two-year period. Conducted at ten public pediatric hospitals across five states, the initiative aims to combat Australia's alarming rate of food allergies, which has seen a significant increase in hospital admissions due to anaphylaxis. Assistant Minister for Health Ged Kearney highlighted the program as a potential game changer for families living with peanut allergies, addressing fears of accidental exposure. While some children may experience mild side effects, the program's structure includes careful monitoring and follow-up food tests to evaluate success. Researchers hope that if the program proves effective, it could be expanded to more healthcare facilities in the future.
