GM Plans Cadillac Escalade IQ Eyes-Off Driving Launch 2028

General Motors has announced that starting in 2028, the Cadillac Escalade IQ will be the first vehicle to offer an "eyes-off" version of its Super Cruise semi-autonomous driving system, allowing drivers to disengage from steering and road monitoring on pre-mapped highways. This Level 3 autonomy will leverage a new centralized computing platform integrating lidar, radar, and cameras through sensor fusion, enhancing safety and capability beyond the current Super Cruise system that requires drivers to keep their eyes on the road. The system will feature turquoise lights on the dashboard and side mirrors to indicate when eyes-off mode is active, though legal restrictions currently limit such usage to certain states like California and Nevada. GM's approach builds on over 700 million miles of hands-free driving without crashes and five million fully driverless miles from its Cruise division, combining to create a highly validated autonomous driving experience. Alongside eyes-off driving, GM will introduce conversational AI powered by Google Gemini in 2026 for natural language interactions, with plans for a more personalized in-house AI in the future.
