Warning issued after venomous sea snake spotted at Omaha Beach, Auckland
The Department of Conservation (DOC) has warned the public to stay clear of the southern end of Omaha Beach, near Auckland, after a live yellow-bellied sea snake was discovered in the sand dunes by a member of the public. DOC officials emphasized that the yellow-bellied sea snake is venomous and can be aggressive, though it is native to New Zealand and typically inhabits the Pacific Ocean rather than land. Recent extreme weather is believed to have contributed to the rare event of the snake being washed ashore, along with other wildlife. A DOC ranger has been dispatched to assess the situation, and the area is expected to be cordoned off pending further action. Authorities remind the public it is illegal to harm, possess, or kill these native sea snakes, and urge anyone who encounters the animal to report sightings to DOC immediately. The warning is particularly directed at dog walkers and families with children who frequent the area.
