Ashmolean Museum Acquires Fra Angelico Painting
The Ashmolean Museum in Oxford has successfully raised £4.48 million to acquire Fra Angelico’s Crucifixion painting, ensuring it remains in the UK after being at risk of export. This acquisition, facilitated by major donations and grants, was made possible due to a temporary export deferral granted by the UK government, which allowed the museum time to secure funds. The Crucifixion, painted in the 1420s, is the earliest surviving panel work by Fra Angelico and an important exemplar of early Italian Renaissance art. Ashmolean director Dr. Xa Sturgis emphasized the significance of making great art accessible to the public, noting that the painting will be displayed for visitors free of charge. This acquisition will also allow the museum to showcase the evolution of Fra Angelico's work alongside another of his later pieces. The painting's preservation is seen as a victory for cultural heritage in the UK.
