NHS reports record norovirus cases, hospitals near capacity

England is currently experiencing a significant surge in norovirus infections, with hospitalizations reaching an all-time winter high. An average of 1,160 patients were hospitalized daily last week due to norovirus, marking a 22% increase from the previous week and more than double the number from last year. NHS officials have expressed concern over the capacity of hospitals, which are operating near full as nearly one in seven beds are occupied by patients who are medically fit for discharge. Professor Sir Stephen Powis of NHS England highlighted the relentless pressure on hospital staff who are managing both norovirus and other winter viruses. The UK Health Security Agency's Amy Douglas emphasized the importance of proper hygiene practices, stating that alcohol gels do not eliminate the virus, and advised frequent handwashing with soap and water. Preventive measures are critical as hospitals brace for ongoing high levels of infection, particularly affecting vulnerable groups such as the elderly and immunocompromised individuals.
