Meta Suspends AI Tools in EU and Brazil

Meta has decided not to launch its next-generation multimodal AI model in the European Union due to uncertainties in the region's regulatory environment. The company cited challenges with complying with the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR) and the upcoming EU AI Act as primary reasons for the decision. Similar to Apple's stance, Meta expressed concerns about the lack of clarity on how to use European user data for training AI models. Consequently, European companies will be unable to utilize these advanced AI tools, potentially hindering innovation and competition. Meta's text-only AI model, Llama 3, will still be available in the EU. The company is facing similar regulatory challenges in Brazil, resulting in a suspension of its generative AI tools there.
