Carnival Cruise Line Faces Widespread Backlash Over Upcoming Spend-Based Loyalty Overhaul
Carnival Cruise Line is overhauling its loyalty program, transitioning from the VIFP Club, which rewarded members based on sailing days, to the Carnival Rewards program, which will base status on spending over a two-year period. This change, set to take effect in June 2026, eliminates lifetime status and requires members to re-qualify every two years, causing significant backlash among loyal customers who feel their long-term loyalty is being undervalued. Carnival explains the shift as a response to an unsustainable number of top-tier members under the previous system, which diluted the value of rewards and recognition. The new program will convert spending on cruises and onboard activities into points redeemable for various rewards, and a Carnival-branded credit card will offer additional benefits. Carnival's brand ambassador, John Heald, has addressed the criticism but emphasized that the program details are not yet final and that he will temporarily stop responding to related queries due to overwhelming feedback. Despite potential benefits, many customers express frustration, feeling abandoned by the loss of guaranteed status and the increased spending requirements, with some threatening to switch cruise lines.
