South African Sports Minister Investigated for Racial Slurs Amid Apartheid Legacy Debate
South Africa’s Sports, Arts and Culture Minister Gayton McKenzie is under investigation by the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC) for historic social media posts in which he used one of the country’s most offensive racial slurs, the "kaffir" word, a term deemed unlawful and profoundly offensive by the constitutional court. The posts, made between 2011 and 2017, emerged shortly after McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance party filed complaints against a podcast that mocked the Coloured community, which the party represents, accusing it of racism. McKenzie has apologized for his past comments, calling them "stupid and hurtful," but denies being racist and describes the investigation as a political attack. The SAHRC has demanded that McKenzie delete the offensive posts, issue a public apology, undergo sensitivity training, and make a donation to an agreed charity. This controversy has reignited broader debates about racism, identity, and the persistent legacy of apartheid and colonialism in South Africa, where racial classifications like "Coloured" remain politically and socially significant. McKenzie’s Patriotic Alliance, which won parliamentary representation in 2024, is seen as a voice for the Coloured community amid ongoing struggles with racial hierarchy and marginalization in the post-apartheid era.
