Houthi Attack on Panama-Flagged Vessel in Red Sea

Yemen's Houthi rebels are suspected of attacking the Panama-flagged bulk carrier Anadolu S as it traveled through the Red Sea and Gulf of Aden, though no damage or injuries were reported. The vessel encountered missile strikes near the Bab el-Mandeb Strait and later near Aden, which did not deter its journey. These incidents are part of ongoing assaults by the Houthis, who have targeted over 90 merchant vessels since the onset of the Gaza conflict in October 2023. The rebels aim to enforce a naval blockade on Israel in support of the Palestinians, targeting ships linked to Israel, the U.S., or the U.K., although many affected vessels have no direct connection to the conflict. A U.S.-led coalition has intercepted some attacks, while others have failed to hit their targets. The Houthis have also claimed responsibility for downing American drones in the region.
