Geminid Meteor Shower Peaks Over Ireland
The Geminid meteor shower, heralded as the best of the year, is set to peak in Irish skies tonight and tomorrow, with up to 150 meteors visible per hour under optimal conditions. David Moore, editor of Astronomy Ireland Magazine, emphasizes that this shower, originating from asteroid 3200 Phaethon, is known for its bright fireballs and multi-coloured displays. While a full moon may hinder the visibility of fainter meteors, the Geminids are expected to produce many bright sightings, making them accessible even to urban dwellers. The optimal viewing time is around 2am, but the shower can be seen starting at dusk, around 5pm. Stargazers are advised to find dark locations, lie back, and allow their eyes to adjust to the darkness to fully enjoy the celestial spectacle. The meteor shower, which began on December 4, will continue into next week, offering plenty of opportunities for observation.
