Butch Carter alleges sexual abuse by Indiana doctor, joins four other accusers

Former Indiana University basketball player Butch Carter has filed an amended lawsuit alleging sexual abuse by former team physician Dr. Bradford Bomba Sr. Carter, who played under coach Bob Knight from 1976 to 1980, claims Bomba performed unnecessary rectal exams on him and other athletes, but the school did not act on his complaints. Carter is the fifth former player to make such allegations, joining a class action lawsuit filed under Title IX against Indiana University trustees and men's basketball trainer Tim Garl, who allegedly knew of the abuse. Bomba, though not a named defendant, has invoked his Fifth Amendment rights in a deposition. The university has engaged the law firm of Jones Day to investigate these claims. Despite the accusations, Bomba remained the team doctor for decades, and the case highlights alleged failures in safeguarding student-athletes from abuse.
