Namibia's state-owned electricity provider, NamPower, has signed an agreement with Chinese firms China Jiangxi International Economic and Technical Corp. and Zhejiang Chint New Energy Development to construct the country's largest solar power plant in Rosh Pinah, which will have a capacity of 100 megawatts. The project, costing approximately N$1.6 billion (about $89 million), is primarily funded by a loan from the German development bank KfW, covering 80% of the costs, with the remainder provided by NamPower. This initiative aims to enhance Namibia's electricity self-sufficiency and stabilize future tariff increases, with commercial operations expected to commence in mid-2026. Concurrently, the China General Nuclear Power Group (CGN) has confirmed plans to build Africa’s largest desalination plant in Namibia, which will address significant water shortages and produce between 20 to 25 million cubic meters of water annually by 2026. This desalination project is part of the China-Namibia Belt and Road Initiative and will support industrial growth in the country. These developments highlight Namibia's efforts to improve its infrastructure and address essential resource needs amid growing economic demands.
