Magnitude 5.5 Earthquake Strikes Near Lake Tahoe
A magnitude 5.5 earthquake struck near Yerington, Nevada, on Monday afternoon, shaking areas as far as Central California, including Sacramento and parts of the San Francisco Bay Area. The U.S. Geological Survey reported the quake's epicenter was about 16 miles northeast of Yerington, with a depth of 4.7 miles. No injuries or significant damages were reported, although the tremor was felt by thousands, evidenced by over 8,000 reports to the USGS. The earthquake, initially recorded at a magnitude of 5.8, was followed by at least nine aftershocks ranging from 2.5 to 3.3 in magnitude. Although the shaking varied from weak to moderate across the region, it did not result in any tsunami warnings. This event occurred just days after a larger 7.0 magnitude earthquake in Sonoma County.
