Jimmy Carter's Funeral Procession Through Plains
The six-day state funeral for former President Jimmy Carter began with a procession from the Phoebe Sumter Medical Center in Americus to his hometown of Plains, Georgia. Mourners, including Carter's family, lined the route, paying their respects as the flag-draped casket passed by significant locations from Carter's life, including his boyhood home. The 100-year-old Carter, who died on December 29, was lauded for his humanitarian efforts and progressive views on issues like climate change. Young admirers, such as 12-year-old Will Porter Shelbrock, expressed their appreciation for Carter's legacy and achievements. The procession included a poignant moment where the National Park Service rang a bell 39 times to honor Carter's presidency. The funeral will conclude with a service at the Carter Center in Atlanta.
