New Mexico Basketball Players Under Investigation

The University of New Mexico is investigating an incident involving its men's basketball players, where a walk-on player allegedly punched a scholarship teammate during a flight to California for the Acrisure Classic. The altercation reportedly arose over seating, with the walk-on, who was in a sling due to a prior shoulder injury, being punched in the same shoulder. Following the incident, which also allegedly included a second punch at the hotel, the victim required medical treatment upon returning to Albuquerque. Despite informing the coaching staff, led by Richard Pitino, the walk-on claims no action was taken against the scholarship player, who subsequently participated in two games after the incident. The university has stated it takes student safety seriously and is reviewing the situation, but is limited in what it can disclose due to privacy laws. Both players involved remain unnamed as the investigation continues.
