Three Women Die in Water Incidents Oregon, Missouri, Ohio

Amy Hastie, an Eugene woman, died after nearly drowning in the Willamette River on July 3, when she was separated from her floatie and struggled against the current. An unhoused person performed CPR on her at a gravel bar before emergency crews arrived and continued resuscitation efforts, but she succumbed shortly after being hospitalized. The Eugene Springfield Fire department is seeking to recognize the individual who initially intervened, while Hastie's family has set up a GoFundMe to cover funeral expenses and relocate her young daughter. Following the incident, ESF cautioned against using inappropriate flotation devices and stressed the importance of life vests to prevent similar emergencies. Additionally, other recent water-related fatalities include a 25-year-old woman, Crista Allman, who died after falling from a canoe on the Spring River near the Saddler Falls area, and another woman who died after a medical emergency at a public pool in Martins Ferry. These incidents highlight ongoing risks associated with water activities and the need for safety precautions and adequate emergency response resources.
