Dutch Government Releases Guidelines Limiting Children Under 15 From Social Media
The Dutch government has issued new guidelines recommending that children under 15 avoid social media platforms such as TikTok and Instagram due to concerns about psychological and physical health issues, including panic attacks, depression, and sleep difficulties. The guidelines also advise delaying smartphone use until ages 11 to 12 and limiting daily screen time for adolescents over 12 to no more than three hours. These recommendations distinguish between social media platforms and messaging services like WhatsApp, which children may use from age 13 to support social interaction. While not legally binding, the government plans to launch a nationwide awareness campaign and calls for stronger European cooperation to establish uniform age standards and improve digital legislation enforcement. The guidelines respond to growing concerns among parents, educators, and experts, including endorsements from thousands of professionals, and align with similar initiatives in other European countries such as France, Denmark, and Sweden. Dutch schools have also implemented bans on devices like tablets and smartphones during classes, except for educational purposes such as media literacy.
