Archaeologists Discover Fifth-Century Solomon Amulet

Archaeologists in Turkey have uncovered a rare fifth-century bronze amulet depicting King Solomon, who is associated with demon-slaying, referencing the apocryphal 'Testament of Solomon' that was excluded from the Bible due to its themes of magic. The amulet, found in the ruins of a military structure in Paphlagonia, features inscriptions that translate to 'Our Lord defeated the devil,' alongside names of four archangels: Azrael, Gabriel, Michael, and Israfil. The Testament details how Solomon, aided by the Archangel Michael, used a magical ring to command demons, including Beelzebul, to assist in building his temple. This discovery suggests that the pendant served as a protective charm, indicating that ancient people believed in the narratives within the Testament. Dr. Ersin Çelikbaş, leading the excavation, emphasizes the amulet's significance as a symbol of both religion and power, noting that it is unique to the region. This finding adds depth to the understanding of Solomon's complex portrayal in historical texts and the cultural beliefs surrounding him.
