Rockdale County Sues BioLab Over Conyers Fire

Rockdale County, Georgia, is filing a federal lawsuit against BioLab and its parent company, KIK Consumer Products, following a fire at their Conyers facility that released a chemical plume and forced thousands to evacuate. The fire disrupted the community, impacting businesses and causing schools to switch to virtual learning. County officials plan to seek compensation for affected residents and businesses, aiming to permanently shut down the BioLab site in Rockdale County. Commissioner Sherri Washington emphasized the repeated negligence by BioLab over the years and the health risks posed by their operations. Despite BioLab's efforts to mitigate the impact and work with local authorities, community members feel insufficiently supported. The Environmental Protection Agency reported no air quality exceedances for 72 hours after the incident, allowing the shelter-in-place order to be lifted.
