Carrboro's Landmark Climate Lawsuit Against Duke Energy

The town of Carrboro, North Carolina, has filed a historic lawsuit against Duke Energy, accusing the utility of a decades-long 'deception campaign' about the dangers of fossil fuels and climate crisis. This marks the first time a U.S. municipality has sued an electric utility for climate deception, alleging that Duke Energy's misinformation delayed the transition to renewable energy and increased Carrboro's climate-related costs. Carrboro claims it will incur millions in damages due to more frequent and severe weather events linked to climate change. The lawsuit, filed in North Carolina Superior Court, suggests that Duke was aware of the harmful effects of carbon emissions since the late 1960s but continued investing in coal and gas while funding misinformation campaigns. Mayor Barbara Foushee emphasizes the need for accountability and investment in climate resilience, as the town faces ongoing burdens such as infrastructure repair costs and higher energy bills. Duke Energy has not yet commented on the allegations.
