Michelle Leonard recalls role in Operation Argus capture of Clifton Rapist
In the late 1970s, Bristol was gripped by fear as Ronald Evans, later dubbed the 'Clifton Rapist', terrorized women in the Clifton, Redland, and Westbury Park areas, attacking seven victims over 18 months. In response to public outcry, police launched Operation Argus, deploying both male and female officers in disguises to lure the rapist. Rookie officer Michelle Leonard, then 24, played a key role in the operation, walking a pre-planned route where previous assaults occurred. On March 23, 1979, Evans attempted to grab Leonard, but police were ready and arrested him after he fell into their trap. Leonard reflected on the atmosphere of fear, noting how women felt compelled to avoid walking alone at night. This innovative operation was pivotal in capturing Evans, who had a prior conviction for murder and was ultimately sentenced for his crimes.
