Babiš's ANO Party Wins Czech Parliamentary Election, Signals Political Shift
Andrej Babiš, a populist billionaire and former Prime Minister of the Czech Republic, is poised to return to power after his party ANO won the 2025 parliamentary elections with around 35% of the vote, significantly ahead of the center-right coalition led by current Prime Minister Petr Fiala. Babiš's victory signals a potential political shift in the Czech Republic towards a harder stance on immigration, stronger social security policies, and a more neutral or pro-Russian position regarding the Ukraine conflict, aligning with other Eurosceptic leaders like Hungary's Viktor Orbán and Slovakia's Robert Fico. Despite controversies from his previous tenure, including allegations of fraud and links to far-right politics, Babiš insists he supports the EU and NATO but advocates for a ceasefire in Ukraine irrespective of conditions. His return may also bring the Czech Republic closer to the positions of neighboring countries that oppose military aid to Ukraine and sanctions on Russia. Babiš's ability to form a government will depend on coalition-building with fringe parties, some of which oppose EU green policies and support his agenda. His election has been recognized by Fiala, who conceded to the changing political preferences of the electorate.
