Stumbling stones in Guernsey
Fifteen Stolpersteine, or stumbling stones, were unveiled in Guernsey to commemorate victims of Nazi persecution during World War II, including three Jewish women deported to Auschwitz and members of the Guernsey Underground News Service. The project, initiated by German artist Gunter Demnig in 1992, aims to honor individual stories behind the numbers of victims, with over 100,000 stones now laid across Europe. The locations of the stones were carefully chosen based on where the individuals lived or worked, like the stones for the Jewish nurses placed near the Castel Hospital. Iris Prigent also expressed her sentiments regarding her late husband, Gordon, who suffered as a conscripted laborer, highlighting the personal impact of the occupation. This initiative seeks to educate future generations about the atrocities of the past to prevent their recurrence. The ceremonies included presentations from historians and community members paying their respects to the laid stones.
