Man Sentenced for Attacking Judge in Court

Deobra Redden, 31, has been sentenced to between 26 and 65 years in prison for attacking Judge Mary Kay Holthus in a Clark County courtroom. The incident occurred on January 3, 2024, when Redden leaped over the judge's bench, flailing his arms, as she was about to deliver his sentence in a separate felony battery case. Judge Holthus testified that she feared for her life during the attack, which was captured on courtroom video. Redden pleaded guilty but mentally ill to attempted murder and other charges, with his defense citing his struggles with mental illness and a lack of medication at the time. During sentencing, the judge criticized Redden's actions as an attack on the judiciary, despite acknowledging his mental health issues. Redden will be eligible for parole after 2050, with his defense asserting he did not intend to harm the judge.
