Rio Takeda Wins First LPGA Title in Japan

Rio Takeda, a 21-year-old golfer from Japan, claimed her first LPGA title at the Toto Japan Classic, triumphing over American Marina Alex in a dramatic six-hole playoff. The tournament was shortened to 54 holes due to rain, but Takeda forced the playoff by birdieing the 18th hole, finishing both players at 15 under par. In the playoff, both players birdied the first hole and matched pars for the next four, but Takeda sealed her victory with a birdie on the par-five 18th. This win not only marks her eighth title of the season on the JLPGA but also secures her a coveted LPGA tour card, allowing her to skip the upcoming Q School. Takeda expressed her excitement about joining the LPGA, stating, “I can skip that Q School and go and play next year on the LPGA tour.” Meanwhile, Alex's performance has positioned her for a spot in the upcoming CME Group Tour Championship.
