Kenya Aviation Workers Plan Strike Over KAA Board Disputes, Job Security Concerns
The Kenya Aviation Workers Union (KAWU) has issued a seven-day strike notice to the Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) over multiple grievances, including poor governance, incompetence of the KAA board, and the fallout from the scrapped Adani Group airport leasing deal. The union demands the resignation of the KAA board, citing loss of faith due to systemic inefficiencies and bad decisions that do not serve Kenyan interests. Additional issues include the transfer of the Ground Flight Safety department to the Kenya Civil Aviation Authority, which threatens job losses, failure to confirm over 500 contract employees to permanent status, unpaid overtime for Wilson Airport staff, and lack of proper appointment letters for promoted employees. KAWU warns that unless these issues are conclusively resolved, workers will begin strike action which could disrupt operations at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport, one of Africa's busiest aviation hubs. The union also criticizes the dismantling of the Human Resources department, which has negatively impacted staff welfare and collective bargaining processes. KAA has yet to respond to the strike notice or the union's demands.
