Veteran Charged After Shooting During Protest
Scott Hayes, a 47-year-old Iraq war veteran, has been arrested in Newton, Massachusetts, for allegedly shooting a pro-Palestinian protester during a pro-Israel demonstration. The incident occurred when the victim, who was wearing a Palestinian flag pin, charged at Hayes after shouting accusations of 'genocide' at the demonstrators. Footage shows the two engaging in a scuffle before a gunshot rang out, leaving the victim with life-threatening injuries. Hayes has been charged with assault and battery with a dangerous weapon and violation of a constitutional right causing injury; he is scheduled for arraignment. Mayor Ruthanne Fuller and District Attorney Marian Ryan have both commented on the need for calm and thorough investigation in the aftermath of this 'frightening incident'. The police are providing additional security at local places of worship following the altercation.
