Botswana's new president
Duma Gideon Boko was sworn in as Botswana's sixth president following a surprising electoral victory that ended the Botswana Democratic Party's (BDP) nearly 60-year reign. In his inaugural address, Boko expressed gratitude to the citizens of Botswana and pledged to serve diligently. His Umbrella for Democratic Change (UDC) party secured at least 35 out of 61 parliamentary seats, allowing them to form a government, while the outgoing president Mokgweetsi Masisi conceded defeat. The Zimbabwean government extended congratulations to Boko, emphasizing hopes for strengthened diplomatic relations. Boko, a seasoned human rights lawyer and Harvard graduate, has spent three decades in opposition and emphasized his commitment to the nation's welfare. His victory marks a historic shift in Botswana's political landscape, as he aims to address the aspirations of a nation eager for change.
