B.C. mandates Canadian-made biofuels, doubles diesel blend requirement
British Columbia is set to enhance its energy resilience and bolster local biofuel producers by amending regulations under the Low Carbon Fuels Act. Starting January 1, 2026, gasoline must contain at least five percent renewable fuel sourced from Canadian-made products, while the minimum requirement for diesel will rise from four to eight percent effective immediately, also mandating Canadian origin. This initiative aims to counteract the competitive edge U.S. biofuel producers have gained through subsidies, particularly those escalated by the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act. Energy Minister Adrian Dix remarked that these changes will support local jobs and promote a sustainable fuel supply. Industry representatives, including Jeremy Baines of Tidewater Renewables, view the amendments as a significant step towards fostering an economically viable domestic renewable fuels sector. The government's commitment is seen as essential for stabilizing the biofuel market in the province.
