Bury Town Centre Faces Five-Month Road Closures, Bridge Repairs
Motorists in Bury town centre are facing up to five months of traffic disruption due to two major projects: the installation of a new market canopy roof and essential bridge repairs on Market Street. Road closures and diversions will occur occasionally, mainly overnight from 7pm to 6am, affecting the eastbound carriageway on Angouleme Way between Murray Road and Spring Street, with disruptions expected to continue until October 5. The bridge repair project, starting May 27 and lasting five months, involves replacing the bridge bearings to ensure stability and safety for both road users and the East Lancashire Railway beneath, necessitating the closure of a section of Market Street between Pyramid Park and Bury Athletics Track. Diversion routes will be clearly signposted to maintain access, and pedestrian footpaths will remain open. The overnight closures allow for the delivery and crane installation of steel and timber sections of the market canopy, with efforts made to minimize disruption by scheduling work outside peak travel times and not on market days. Bury Council has indicated that future closure dates and times will be published as they become known.
