James Gunn’s Superman Passes $600 Million Global Box Office
James Gunn's Superman, starring David Corenswet and released under the new leadership of Gunn and Peter Safran at DC Studios, has become the first superhero film of 2025 to surpass $600 million globally at the box office. The film, which opened with $125 million domestically and maintained strong ticket sales, reached $599.6 million by Thursday, with $343.6 million from North America and $256 million internationally. Despite a hefty production budget of around $225 million plus marketing costs, Superman stands as the highest-grossing comic book adaptation of the year and outperforms Marvel's 2025 releases like The Fantastic Four: First Steps, Thunderbolts, and Captain America: Brave New World. This milestone marks a significant boost for the revitalized DC brand following several underperforming titles in recent years. While the superhero genre continues to face audience fatigue and challenges internationally, Superman has been critically acclaimed and well-received, positioning itself as a key success for Warner Bros. Discovery CEO David Zaslav's strategy to reinvigorate the DC Extended Universe. The film also complements the launch of Gunn’s Peacemaker Season 2 on HBO Max, further expanding the new DC Universe.
