Gary Lineker Steps Down as BBC Host

Gary Lineker, former England striker and long-time host of BBC's Match of the Day and Sports Personality of the Year (SPOTY), has revealed his lack of enjoyment in hosting SPOTY. Lineker, who is departing from these roles, cited the shift of SPOTY to an independent production company as an opportunity to step down. He expressed dissatisfaction with the show's format, which required strict adherence to pre-agreed scripts and questions, limiting his ability to ad-lib. Despite stepping down from these roles, Lineker will continue to work with the BBC, covering the FA Cup and the 2026 World Cup. His decision was not related to his departure from Match of the Day. This year's SPOTY was hosted by an all-female presenting team and awarded to Keely Hodgkinson.
