Scotland's NHS Recovery Lags Behind England
A recent analysis by the Institute for Fiscal Studies (IFS) reveals that Scotland's NHS is significantly lagging behind England in recovering from the Covid-19 pandemic, with hospital activity and waiting times worsening. Between April and June 2023, Scotland recorded a 15% drop in elective inpatient admissions and a 6% decrease in outpatient appointments compared to pre-pandemic levels, while England has seen improvements in these areas. The number of people on waiting lists in Scotland has surged, with those waiting over a year rising from 4,365 in 2019 to 72,793 in June 2023. Despite increased funding and staffing in Scotland, delays in Accident & Emergency and cancer treatment are also escalating, contrasting sharply with the reductions in waiting times in England. The IFS report suggests that the Scottish Government must address these issues transparently and focus on increasing hospital productivity to close the performance gap. The findings have led to criticism from opposition parties, who argue that the SNP's management of the NHS is failing.
