Ethiopia Mudslides Death Toll Reaches 229

The death toll from two devastating landslides in the Gofa zone of southern Ethiopia has risen to 229, with numbers expected to increase as rescue operations continue. Heavy rains triggered the first landslide on Sunday night, burying many victims, followed by a second landslide on Monday morning that engulfed rescuers. Many children, women, and police officers are among the deceased. Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed expressed deep sorrow over the tragedy, and federal task forces have been deployed for rescue efforts. The African Union and the World Health Organization have pledged support, emphasizing the need for vigilance against climate change-induced disasters. Local residents are using shovels and bare hands in desperate attempts to find survivors.
