Lithuania and Rheinmetall Launch Artillery Plant

Rheinmetall has commenced construction of a state-of-the-art 155mm artillery ammunition plant in Baisogala, Lithuania, with operations set to begin in mid-2026. The project, which involves an investment of €180 million, aims to produce tens of thousands of artillery shells annually and is expected to create approximately 150 jobs while integrating local companies into the production supply chain. The initiative is part of Lithuania's strategy to enhance its defense capabilities and reduce reliance on international arms markets, as noted by Prime Minister Ingrida Šimonytė and other government officials. Key agreements related to land leasing and procurement were signed during a ceremony attended by Lithuanian leaders and Rheinmetall executives. The plant spans 340 hectares and will significantly bolster both Lithuania’s defense industry and its economic resilience. This collaboration underscores the strengthening partnership between Lithuania and Germany in defense matters amid a deteriorating security environment.
