Bichette Returns, Expected to Start Game 3
Bo Bichette returned from a left-knee sprain to start Game 1 of the World Series at second base for the first time in his major-league career, and the Toronto Blue Jays defeated the Los Angeles Dodgers 11-4. He batted cleanup after proposing the move to second to get back in the lineup, recorded a first-inning single, drew a leadoff walk in the nine-run sixth, made a backhanded play at second in the third to save a run, then favored the knee later and was removed for a pinch-runner. Toronto rested Bichette for Game 2 as it carefully managed his workload, and he is expected to start at second for Game 3 when the series shifts to Los Angeles. Manager John Schneider said Bichette has looked good in workouts, has played well defensively in limited action and will be available to help the lineup. Bichette hit .311 this season with 18 home runs and 94 RBIs, is a two-time All-Star and is eligible for free agency after the World Series. His long-term future in Toronto is uncertain amid concerns about lower-body injuries and reports that teams, including the Dodgers, have monitored his status, and the Jays’ cautious usage has drawn local scrutiny even as his bat remains vital in the postseason.
