Punjab Police, in coordination with the Narcotics Control Bureau (NCB), have detained notorious drug smuggler Balwinder Singh, alias Billa Sarpanch, in a significant operation aimed at disrupting the drug mafia linked to jail officials in Punjab. Billa, a habitual offender with over 15 criminal cases predominantly related to narcotics and arms, has been transferred to Dibrugarh Central Jail in Assam under the Prevention of Illicit Traffic in NDPS Act (PIT-NDPS), marking the first such transfer in Punjab's history. This strategic move is intended to prevent any potential escape attempts and to ensure his safety while dismantling deep-rooted connections between drug traffickers and law enforcement. Punjab DGP Gaurav Yadav emphasized that the operation is part of a broader crackdown on corruption in the state's police force. Billa has established ties with trans-border drug smuggling networks involving Pakistani smugglers, and investigations are ongoing to uncover his accomplices. The transfer of Billa follows a recent order by Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann to address systemic issues within the police related to drug trafficking.
