Greece Launches Second FDI Frigate Nearchos

On September 19, 2024, Naval Group launched the second Hellenic Ship (HS) Nearchos frigate at its Lorient shipyard in France, marking a significant milestone in Greece's naval modernization efforts. Greek Defense Minister Nikos Dendias attended the ceremony, emphasizing that the Nearchos will bolster Greece's maritime capabilities in the Eastern Mediterranean alongside its sister ship HS Kimon. Greece is also set to negotiate the acquisition of a fourth Belharra frigate from France, aiming to enhance its naval fleet further. The Kimon-class frigates are designed for multipurpose operations, boasting advanced defense systems and weaponry, including the capability to carry SCALP Naval cruise missiles. This initiative reflects the growing defense collaboration between Greece and France, underpinned by a 2021 defense pact promoting mutual security. The frigates are expected to be delivered by 2025 and 2026, contributing to Greece's strategic defense posture amid regional tensions with Turkey.
