Judge Upholds Charges Against Driver in Gaudreau Fatalities

Superior Court Judge Michael Silvanio upheld all charges against Sean Higgins, accused of causing the deaths of NHL star Johnny Gaudreau and his brother Matthew, rejecting the defense's claim that the brothers' own alcohol consumption contributed to their deaths. The Gaudreaus were struck by Higgins' vehicle while cycling the night before their sister's wedding, with evidence showing Higgins was impaired and allegedly driving recklessly. Witnesses confirmed that the brothers were riding safely and in line with traffic, contradicting the defense's argument of contributory negligence. Prosecutors presented evidence of Higgins’ illegal maneuvering and speeding, and the court dismissed the motion to reduce or dismiss the charges, deeming the grand jury indictment thorough. Despite the defense's contention of insufficient evidence for some charges, the court found adequate evidence had been presented to support the charges of aggravated manslaughter and vehicular homicide.
