South Africa Withdraws Peacekeepers from Eastern Congo Amid Escalating Rebel Violence
The Southern African Development Community (SADC) has begun withdrawing peacekeeping troops from eastern Democratic Republic of Congo after escalating violence and heavy casualties, particularly following the fall of Goma to M23 rebels in January. Troops from South Africa, Malawi, and Tanzania have started leaving the region, with Rwanda providing safe passage and escort through its territory into Tanzania. The peacekeeping mission, launched in late 2023, faced significant challenges as M23, allegedly backed by thousands of Rwandan soldiers according to the UN and Congolese government, captured key towns and inflicted losses on SADC forces. The withdrawal follows a SADC decision to end the mission early, amid accusations of collaboration between SADC troops, Congolese forces, and local militias. The humanitarian crisis in the region has intensified, displacing millions, while ongoing mediation efforts involving Rwanda, Congo, Qatar, and the United States have yet to secure lasting peace. The International Committee of the Red Cross is assisting in the safe return of stranded Congolese soldiers and civilians, as fighting continues in eastern Congo.
