UK Government Approves £1.6 Billion A66 Dualling Scheme Across North
The Government has approved the £1.3-1.6 billion A66 Northern Trans-Pennine route scheme, which will create a continuous dual carriageway between the M6 at Penrith and the A1(M) at Scotch Corner, improving journey times by up to 12 minutes and enhancing capacity. The route is a key economic corridor for regional, national, and international trade, with heavy goods vehicles accounting for 25% of its traffic, more than double the national average. The upgrades are expected to boost freight connections, tourism to areas like the Yorkshire Dales and Lake District, and regional economic growth by improving access and reliability. Alongside the A66 project, the Government is investing over £92 billion in Northern and Midlands infrastructure, including rail upgrades like the Transpennine Route Upgrade and a new station in North Yorkshire, aiming to create 42,000 jobs and support 1.5 million new homes under its Plan for Change. Transport Secretary Heidi Alexander emphasized the importance of transport infrastructure as the backbone of the economy and highlighted the Government's commitment to making everyday journeys easier and fostering economic renewal. The approval ends years of delays and campaigning, with local MPs welcoming the investment for its anticipated safety, economic, and connectivity benefits.
