Hudbay Minerals Suspends Northern Manitoba Operations Due Wildfires, Evacuation
Hudbay Minerals has temporarily suspended operations at its Snow Lake mine in northern Manitoba due to advancing wildfires and precautionary evacuation orders affecting Snow Lake, Flin Flon, and surrounding areas. The company has maintained only essential personnel authorized by emergency services to assist with emergency activities and has paused exploration efforts in both regions. Despite the suspension, Hudbay believes its infrastructure is at low risk of wildfire damage and expects to meet its annual production targets for Manitoba, supported by strong performance earlier in the year. The company has prioritized the safety of its employees, First Nations partners, and local communities, providing $1 million in direct financial support and establishing a Community Relief Donations Fund. Hudbay is working closely with municipal and provincial authorities and will monitor conditions to resume full operations when safe. The wildfires, driven by hot and dry conditions, have forced tens of thousands of people to evacuate across northern Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Alberta, also impacting other industries such as oil and gas.
