Ethiopia and Somalia Leaders Strengthen Bilateral Ties

Eritrean President Isaias Afwerki and Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud met in Asmara to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and ensuring stability in Somalia, deemed crucial for the Horn of Africa. The discussions followed a recent agreement between Ethiopia and Somalia aimed at resolving tensions arising from Ethiopia's controversial deal with Somaliland. Meanwhile, Ethiopian and Somali intelligence chiefs convened to advance security cooperation and address mutual challenges, reiterating their commitment to the Ankara Declaration brokered by Türkiye. This declaration, reached on December 12, marked a significant step towards mending relations strained by previous conflicts over territorial sovereignty. Both countries are keen to maintain a fragile detente despite recent clashes in the Jubaland region, highlighting their shared commitment to regional stability and countering terrorism threats.
