China aims to eradicate severe air pollution by 2025

China has set an ambitious goal to eliminate severe air pollution by 2025, coinciding with the conclusion of its 14th Five-Year Plan. Key measures will include enhancing air quality forecasting, improving management of harmful particles like PM2.5, and promoting new energy vehicles and rail transportation. In 2024, the average concentration of PM2.5 in major cities decreased significantly, and the number of days with good air quality increased to 87.2%. However, mobile sources remain a major contributor to pollution, accounting for 60% of nitrogen oxides emissions. The government plans to implement stricter vehicle emission standards and intensify efforts in heavily polluted regions, particularly the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei area. Continuous efforts will be essential to maintain the progress made and tackle remaining challenges in air quality improvement.
