Northampton Saints sign South African lock JJ van der Mescht

Northampton Saints have signed South African lock Juan John ‘JJ’ van der Mescht from Stade Français ahead of the 2025/26 season. The 26-year-old, standing 6’7" and weighing 145kg, made 75 appearances for Stade Français and previously played for the Sharks in South Africa. Saints Director of Rugby Phil Dowson praised van der Mescht's potential, athleticism, and skill, highlighting his ability to make game-changing plays, including a notable 50-metre try in a recent match against Stade Français. The signing aligns with Northampton’s strategy to bolster their forward pack's physicality and depth, with van der Mescht expected to benefit from the coaching expertise at Saints, particularly from scrum coach Jaco Pienaar who previously worked with him.
