Sonia Sotomayor School Dedicated in Yonkers

Supreme Court Justice Sonia Sotomayor celebrated the opening of the Justice Sonia Sotomayor Community School in Yonkers during a ribbon-cutting ceremony on September 16, 2024. The dual-language school, accommodating 675 students from pre-K to eighth grade, aims to promote educational equality and will allow students to learn in both English and Spanish. Sotomayor expressed her gratitude to the community and emphasized the importance of bilingual education, reflecting on her own educational experiences. The school is designed as a community hub, offering facilities accessible to local families and plans for a medical and dental clinic. This newly opened institution is part of efforts to address the district's aging infrastructure, with two more schools planned for the future.
