Ancient Egyptian Coffin Restored and Returned
An ancient Egyptian coffin, dating back to 650 BC, has been restored and returned to Swansea University’s Egypt Center after 26 years of conservation work at Cardiff University. Originally made for a man named Ankhpakhered, the coffin has a complex history, having also been used as a storage box for other artifacts during its time. The restoration process involved thousands of hours of meticulous cleaning and reconstruction, allowing for the vivid depictions of Egyptian gods and hieroglyphs to be fully realized. Curator Dr. Ken Griffin expressed excitement about the project, noting the coffin's poor condition upon arrival and its remarkable transformation. Plans are underway to display the restored coffin in the Egypt Center’s House of Death gallery. This project reflects a significant achievement in preserving and understanding ancient Egyptian artifacts.
