Houston Texans Re-sign Tight End Irv Smith Jr. to One-Year Deal

The Houston Texans have re-signed veteran tight end Irv Smith Jr. to a one-year contract, bringing him back after a brief stint with the team last season. Smith, a former second-round pick, joined the Texans' practice squad in September and was promoted to the active roster in December, appearing in five games but making a minimal impact on offense, with only one playoff reception for two yards. Despite limited production in 2024, Smith adds depth to a tight end group already featuring Dalton Schultz, Brevin Jordan, and Cade Stover, though injuries to Jordan and Stover may affect the competition. Smith has recorded 109 receptions for 973 yards and 10 touchdowns over his NFL career with Houston, Minnesota, and Cincinnati. Some fans are skeptical about his return due to last season's lack of offensive output, but he will have an opportunity to secure a roster spot during minicamp and training camp. The Texans are also expected to consider adding more talent at tight end in the 2025 NFL Draft, given the depth of this year’s class.
